1. Determine when you work best.

I find that I work best in the early hours of the morning when my brain is rested and fresh. When I’ve just woken up around 4/5 am, my mind’s calm and clear and not yet polluted by a sea of daily distractions. I’m able to focus and be most productive.

At this early hour, my body’s rested and revving to go so I can concentrate on working swiftly and effectively.

This works for me, but you may need to determine when you would work best. Perhaps you’re a night owl who shines best when the sun goes down.

Whenever it is that you work best, use that time to produce and be as productive as possible.

2. Relax. Recharge. Replenish.

Your momma was right, all work and no play does make you dull.  So, instead of trying to study every hour God sends, take some time to rest, relax, recharge, and replenish.

Intentionally incorporate rest time in your busy schedule and stick to it. In the end, you’ll be glad you did. When you return to your studies, you’ll be more motivated, energised, focussed and productive.

Self-care is the best care because if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to take care of anyone else.

It’s like those oxygen masks on aeroplanes. They always advise you to put your own on first before helping others.

Without protecting yourself first by wearing your mask, you could endanger your health and won’t be any use to anyone.

In life, it’s the same concept.

Protect yourself with regular self-care so that you can be useful to yourself and others later.

3. Remember your reason for starting

 

Student life can be extremely difficult at times, especially if you have a job, a family, or other life commitments.

Whenever I struggled to stay on top of things as a student, I’d get my head back in the game by reminding myself why I started studying.

Whatever your “Why” is, use it to supercharge your motivation and help you use your time wisely.

Was it because you wanted a better job/life?

Did you want to make your parents and yourself proud?

Did you want to silence the haters who said you’d never amount to anything?

Remember your reason for starting and use it to motivate you to manage your time.

Use helpful tools like planners and calendars to keep you organised. This helps you stay motivated and focussed on managing your time effectively.

We all have the same number of hours each day, so don’t hate others because of their success. Just remember your why and decide what you’ll do with your hours.

Will it be internet surfing, phone swiping, Netflix binging, clubbing, studying, resting, researching, spending quality time with friends and family? You decide.

Make sure whatever you decide to do moves you closer to what you want to accomplish.

It may motivate you if you set yourself a deadline to work towards.

Factor in what needs to be sacrificed so you can achieve your goals and live your dreams. This helps you stay focussed on why you started studying.

You may also benefit from considering where you want to be in 5 years, and what you need to sacrifice now to get to that desired destination.

I know it won’t be easy to make sacrifices, but remember, the harder the battle, the sweeter the victory!

4. Prioritise what’s most important

Different demands in your life require different priority levels. Don’t muddle the most important things with the ones that aren’t so significant.

I’ve found it best to immediately act on things that take 5 minutes or less to do. When I do this, it means there’s one less thing to do in the future, so I can focus on vital tasks that will take longer and may be more significant, like writing an essay or studying for an exam.

For instance, if you need to reply to an email or post a comment to a discussion board, that will take you less than 5-15 minutes, do it now. This ensures that you don’t forget to do it later and then suffer the consequences of forgetting, like getting a lower grade for lack of class participation.

Prioritising what’s most important makes you more organised. This means you’re able to devote more time to essential tasks and you get more done in less time.

5. More haste equals less speed

It’s important to take your time and pay attention to important instructions and guidance given for each module/class. If you’re too hasty and overlook essential information, it could cause you to get disappointing marks, or fail miserably.

It’s best to break things into bitesize bits before attempting to tackle tricky topics. Carefully read and try to understand what’s required of you and don’t hesitate to ask for clarification about anything that you find confusing or difficult to interpret. To achieve the best results, manage your time to allow ample time to review and edit your work before submission. This is far more relaxing than waiting until the last minute and producing sub-standard work in a panicked frenzy.

6. Use a timeline to stay accountable

Having a timeline with distinct dates and deadlines to complete specific tasks helps you stay accountable for how you use your time.

If you work backwards from the due date to the current date, you can create a timeline that helps you see exactly how much time you’re able to spend on each aspect of the task.

Knowing that you have a specific time to complete a task is a great motivation for you to stay focussed.

7. Plan & prepare to study

Your study sessions are significant!

Don’t just wing them and hope for the best results. Take your time and carefully decide on your study space and your study schedule.

An ideal place and time to study may be the difference between you being an average student and a super successful student.

To make the most of your time studying:

a) Before you start studying, have a list of everything you’ll need and make sure they are easily available.

This ranges from good internet access to coloured markers.  Try to avoid having to interrupt your study session because you forgot something that you need. When you lose your momentum, it’s difficult to regain it and your productivity could suffer.

b) Decide how long your study sessions will be based on how much you want to achieve in that timeframe.

Don’t try to cram everything in the night before. This is counterproductive and your chances of retaining the information long term are slim to none. There’s no point getting a passing grade if a week later you’re clueless about the information.

c) Let others know your study schedule.

Letting others know when you’ll be busy studying hopefully will stop them distracting/disturbing you so you can concentrate without interruptions.

d) Ensure your space is conducive to studying effectively.

Depending on what you’re working on, your study space can be a bathroom or a library.

For instance, if you merely need to read and comment on class discussion boards, then you can do this on your phone in your bathroom.

For more in-depth/detailed answers, you may need to research at a library or log on to your computer at a tea/coffee bar, or home while sitting at your study desk.

Adjust and adapt as required, but make sure that your space is distraction-free and not overly comfortable, so you can focus on doing your best work instead of falling asleep.

e) Set defined, realistic goals so that you’re not discouraged and demotivated because of failure.

It’s important to have clearly defined goals to avoid wasting time working unfocussed because you’re not sure what you want to achieve.

It helps if you write down what you want to achieve and how long you have to achieve it. If you’re able to meet this goal, it boosts your confidence and motivates you to continue being productive.

f) Break your work up into bitesize bits so you can easily tackle each task and reduce the risk of becoming overwhelmed.

Working on bite-sized bits of information is better than trying to master large amounts of work. You’re more likely to achieve small goals when working on small amounts of information. This achievement boosts your confidence and motivates you to keep working steadily towards achieving your greater goals.

g) Take notes as you study to help reinforce your learning and to have for future reference.

Writing detailed, comprehensive notes, is an essential part of developing your knowledge of the subject and engaging with the information you’re studying.
